AT THE TOP OF TELEMARK
a painters experience

I was 1000 meter above sea level and surrounded by a 360 degree views of snow-capped mountains as far as the eye could see. It was 10 to 15 degrees below zero.

The challenge was to paint this changing scenario. Weather and lighting conditions change quickly, but remained so good that it was possible to work.

The first thing I did was to find an attractive motif, set up the easel and palette before work was started. Discipline and steady working practices are essential for the success of painting outside in the wilderness.

In the severe cold, I found out that the paint needed a paint medium to be flexible enough to achieve a flow of the work process.

After a few days of work the routine was firmly in place and I was more into the experience of the fantastic light, and how the pigments created the right illusion on canvas. In some of the paintings, one can sense the sparkling cold up there at the top of Telemark.
